The book "Bears in the Backyard" is about urban wildlife such as bears, mountain lions, alligators, coy wolves etc. Recently, near my east county San Diego neighborhood, there was a small dog (Pug breed) attacked in their yard and partially eaten by a mountain lion. Shortly after this was in the local news there was the alligator attack on the 2 yr old child at Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida. The child's traumatized and drowned body was later discovered by law enforcement.
Returning to my area of the woods, this month of June 2016 there have been Mt. Lion sightings in the city of Julian, Ca. :
http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/2016/jun/13/mountain-lions-livestock-julian-protection/2/?st#article-copy In addition, I have reported to the Mission Trails park ranger Chris about probable Mt. Lion in the Mission Gorge riverbed in Santee, Calif. I wonder if the homeless encampments realize the current danger?
Back in the late 90's Ranch Cuyamaca State Park had to kill 11 Mt. Lions due to stalking/attacks and a woman's death. The Mt. lions were later autopsied and found to be healthy. No reason for the attacks was discovered. Perhaps the Mt. lions had previously preyed upon the homeless and no one was the wiser? Keeping pets indoors if possible and building safe enclosures for pigs and livestock is important, however building homes for the homeless is a better answer to deterring future loss of life of both humans and mt. lions.

An excellent book written by Robert K. Massie (SR) and his then wife Suzanne Massie about their son Robert(Bobby) Massie who had Hemophilia. During the AIDS crisis the majority of hemophiliacs died due to contracting the virus through blood transfusion. For inexplicable reason the Massie's son survived. He no longer has hemophilia due to a liver transplant and has been involved in NIH research to discover what exactly made him immune to AIDs although he had contracted HIV. In addition, as a sidenote, Suzanne Massie was a consultant to President Ronald Reagan during his term in office. http://www.suzannemassie.com/bio.html
As a final note, Suzanne's ex- husband Robert K. Massie is a Pulitzer Prize winning author.
