Charlotte’s Web holds an undoubtedly well-deserved place in the canon of “best children’s literature.” I remember being in elementary school and one of my teachers reading this aloud to me. I don’t remember what grade I was in, or who the teacher was, but I remember this story with such clarity that I was surprised at how little I was surprised by events when, last month, I read it myself for the first time since then. And I remembered it so well because I loved the book. (Or maybe because it was read aloud; some of the books I remember best from elementary school aren’t those I read during SSR but those that the teacher read to us—Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, Where the Red Fern Grows, Summer of the Swans, Un Lun Dun…And suddenly I’m advocating for reading aloud...) If you’re an adult and you haven’t read Charlotte’s Web yet, you’ve been deprived of a fantastic story that will make you laugh and cry in turn. If you’re a child, you should definitely read this book. If you’re a parent, I highly suggest you read this one with your kids. It’ll be a treasured moment for the both of you.
