Words cannot express how incredibly heartwarming and impressive the “Rules” novel by Cynthia Lord was. It was an absolutely beautiful and emotion-filled read and although I personally cannot directly relate to Catherine’s life, I can fairly say that it has set the bar high when it comes to eliminating the stereotypes associated with disabilities and the autism spectrum. While Cynthia Lord amazingly wrapped together this book as a whole through the realistic plot and thorough character development, I would’ve liked to see a light specifically shone on the relationship between Catherine and her brother. Overall, if that one vague aspect of the book was elaborated on more, it would’ve significantly enhanced the read and made it much more lifelike. All in all, I absolutely enjoyed reading “Rules” by Cynthia Lord, and I would definitely recommend this novel to readers looking for a heartfelt and one-of-a-kind book. Rating: 4/5 - @BiggerPictureReviews of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board This book will force you to confront and question your own perception of others and what is truly considered to be”normal”. Catherine has an autistic brother, and as a result, often her parents are mainly focused on him. In an effort to make her brother seem more normal, she teaches him new rules that she writes down and draws out. After meeting a boy named Jason at her brother David’s speech therapy office, she develops an unlikely friendship that she would have never expected. This book is tremendously heart-warming and will cause you to feel empathy for Catherine, and David. I would rate this book 5/5 stars and recommend it to absolutely anyone to read since it has an important message and tackles real-life issues. - @The_Reviewer of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library “RULES” by Cynthia Lord is a heartwarming novel about living with someone with special needs. Although one may find this distinct plot difficult to connect with, we all can get a moving lesson and understanding of both people with disabilities and special needs, and the people they are surrounded by. “RULES” has no boundaries, showing the reality of just how difficult it can be to live with somebody with special needs and how much patience and understanding you must have for them. Overall, “RULES” by Cynthia Lord is an inspiring book that hits you right in the feels and just shines a light that forces you to understand the characters’ perspectives.
