William Powell plays Godfrey, a homeless man living in America a few years after the stock market crash of 1929. Powell does a favor for a maiden, played by Carole Lombard, whose whole family is basically oblivious to the tragic poverty of the millions of Americans not in the upper 0.1% and for this favor he gets a job as butler. This film is categorized as a screw-ball comedy and is one of the earliest and best. The American Film Institute ranks this as one of the top 50 American comedies and also in the top 400 of all American films. Now in 2015, just a few years after the Great Recession of 2009, it seems kind of timely, as it depicts the immense wealth gap between the rich and the rest of society.
