The protagonist in Silva’s spy novels is a recurring character. Silva is a captivating writer/story teller. I agree that he does portray different countries in a stereotypical manner, but one has to keep in mind that this is fiction, and the author is allowed to use imagination and viewpoints that are not necessarily universal. The comment in one review on the ”Pope being privy to contract killing” is an example of the author’s use poetic licence in fiction. In my opinion, this is not a valid reason to stop reading Silva’s novels. We have to keep in mind, if we are objective, the history of the papacy is rife with violence, corruption and politics. Read "The Decline and Fall of the Catholic Church", by Malachi Martin, 1981. He covers the history of Popes from the first Pope to the then current Pope. It is extremely enlightening, especially for Catholics.
