One of the few books whose cover caught my attention and prompted me to read this. So many young writers just write about, like, living in Brooklyn and being depressed, that it's refreshing that an up and coming (I rate him "one to watch in 2011") writer does an honest to god genre novel. Portland-based writer Patrick deWitt tackles the Western, a genre in which there are few memorable books, and does a pretty decent job of it. It follows the bloody, picaresque, sometimes comic path of two brothers hired to go to California and kill a man for there boss. It follows the traditional path of the Western, while adding some contemporary quirks and a kind of film noir atmosphere. He gets an extra star for just attempting a Western, but all told I'd rather watch a Western than read one. Cool cover though.
