This film, directed by the great Carol Reed, came prior to all of his great successes like “The Third Man,” “Our Man in Havana,” and “Fallen Idol.” It was made in 1940 and shows the British vying with the Nazi’s to control one of the world’s great scientists. While this is ostensibly a thriller, the Nazi’s are portrayed as evil, but somewhat stupid and awkward. Two British comedy characters reprise their roles from Hitchcock’s very successful 1938 film, “The Lady Vanishes.” Some of the thrilling actions often appear to be from some of those old B films where the good guys seemingly on the verge of losing, come up with a “miracle” winning maneuver. Rex Harrison plays a Brit with a German background who becomes an imposter as a German officer who outwits the Nazi’s to save the scientist and his daughter.
