Never before have I given a Russell-Holmes novel a rating as low as 3 stars. It would have been even lower had I not found Estelle and Robert Goodman so charming. However, I thought I'd read every book in the series in order, so I can now read any and be able to follow what's going on. Clearly, I've not read "The God of the Hive" before, nor "The Language of Bees." This one, from reading the reviews of "Language of Bees," takes right up where that one leaves off. No wonder I was lost so much of the time early on! I could follow particular scenes, but not place them in any context. I would have followed Nancy Pearl's rule and given up if I don't adore Mary Russell and her relationship with Holmes so much. I do admit that my preference is to have them together most of the time, because they strike such wonderful sparks off each other. You completely forget the age and gender differences. They're just two completely compatible people who enjoy even their differences. I loved the fact that three days after meeting Estelle, Mary's loyalty to Holmes was enough for her to lug her all over creation, never mind that she didn't like children. Now I've put a hold on "Language of the Bees," to see if I can make more sense out of both of them together.
