Behind a french twist and sensible clothes, forty-year-old librarian Alison Sheffield hides an extravagant nature. But after last night, even her most proper attire can't disguise the signs-the pink cheeks, the extra-poufy hair, the bounce in her step. Alison Sheffield is in love. The heart-palpitating, nausea-inducing, silly, inexplicable, absurd and pointless kind of love found in a romance novel. And for once in her life, what Alison needs to know she can't find in any reference book-she can only live it...

Forty-year-old reference librarian Ally, after 15 years of voluntary celibacy, falls madly in love/lust with the (married) new conductor of the local orchestra. She begins questioning her solitary existence and attempts to shed the stereotypical trappings of her job: she gets laser eye surgery and dispenses with her thick glasses, she gets her hair cut fashionably, and she takes a less utilitarian approach to her wardrobe. Ho hum. This struck me as a lady doth protest too much-type book: the author, in making her character stereotypical on the outside but less so in her private life (she drives a Miata! and drinks martinis! and has velvet curtains in her loft apartment! and is celibate by choice, and not virginal!), the author seemed to beat the reader over the head, crowing, I made a librarian character who DOESN''T fit the stereotypes! Sorry, Ms. Carr, but you didn''t. And from a purely technical point of view, Ally does not ring true as a librarian: NO information professional would reveal details of a library user''s transactions to another customer, even if the customers were spouses. If you''re looking for a realistic portrayal of a mid-life librarian, look elsewhere. But if you want a quick and fluffy beach read, this may be just what you''re looking for.
