unsurpassed in soviet literature; a page-turner historical novel, whose characters possess the depth and complexity of life. Beautifully evokes the Don-land steppes; Sholokhov's language perfectly mirrors the strength and poignancy of cossack life.

The first time I read this book I loved it. That was before I learned about the controversy surround its authorship. When I read it again recently I couldn't finish it... couldn't believe that Cossacks would talk that nice among themselves.
