This book had some good points but I thought it was the most unrealistic of the series. You figure out very early on the motive and who the murderer is and I get so tired of all the arguing between Benni & Gabe. The part about the grandmother & dad traveling is just plain stupid.

So far this is the best in the series.

Definitely an improving series. This episode follows detective Ortiz back to his family home in Kansas. It may be the change of setting but there was very little tedious recapping of Benni Harper's past, job, and friends to skim over. What was included from previous stories was worked into the story line instead of reading like an intrusive synopsis. Even the comments about the Kansas quilt pattern were integral to the plot and characters.

Gabe remains reticent about sharing a difficult history even while bringing Benni to meet his friends and family. Benni hears details that highlight the conflict Gabe is in placing Benni in the quandary of seeking his past through his friends stories or waiting to hear it directly from her husband. Of course they tussle about this and Gabe's protectiveness versus Benni's naivete constantly getting her involved.
