I recommend finding the highest quality largest television and enjoy this visually stunning film. The cinematography and visual effects alone are worth five stars.

Way way way too long. Surprised Harrison Ford agreed to do this snoozer. If you liked the original, don't waste your time on this one.

Better than expected. Loosely tied to the original.

Way too long, and not that good of a movie.

The CGI and the dystopian settings were effective but the misogyny was out of control!

Intentionally slow, which can be pretty annoying, but ultimately worth the wait.

This is a worthy sequel to the sci-fi classic Blade Runner. It's a visual feast. The score is quite good and the effects are top shelf. The story is quite good but perhaps not as compelling on the surface as the first film. That said, it gets better with multiple viewings. What exactly defines "human" or what does it mean to BE a human are just two of the questions threading through this film. This is a deep and richly-layered film that improves with multiple viewings. It helps to know the original film but it's not required. Fine performances and directing.

Quite a complicated story so I was glad it didn't go too fast or I may have missed the detail. Brilliant special effects, brutal action scenes and a storyline which descends down a very curious rabbit hole.

Artistic movie that felt long at times and pretentious at other times. Felt like I was just waiting to see Harrison Ford pop up in the story. Reminded me of Blade Runner at least so there is that.

I can see how people would find this movie vexing. It IS long, and does have Jared Leto in it (who imo hasn't been good in a film since Lord of War), but it's just such a beautiful film to look at. I don't think there's any question the original Blade Runner is a far better film: the bigger theme of humankind v replicants and the ethical issues arising from their interactions are handled in a far better way. That's probably because it's based on the great writing of Philip K. Dick, rather than just something put together as a sequel. Still, people pan this movie as the worst thing ever made, when it's really far from that. 2049 is a slow burner to be sure, but in a world of rapidly edited and bombastic smash-up films, that's kind of refreshing.

Btw people pan Ryan Gosling and while he does play the same dude in every film, he's been in some great films like Drive, and The Place Beyond the Pines.

Pages of quotes in IMDb including this title card introduction:

Replicants are bioengineered humans, designed by Tyrell Corporation for use off-world. Their enhanced strength made them ideal slave labor. After a series of violent rebellions, their manufacture became prohibited and Tyrell Corp went bankrupt.

The collapse of ecosystems in the mid 2020s led to the rise of industrialist Niander Wallace, whose mastery of synthetic farming averted famine. Wallace acquired the remains of Tyrell Corp and created a new line of replicants who obey. Many older model replicants - Nexus 8s with open-ended lifespans - survived. They are hunted down and 'retired'

Those that hunt them still go by the name... Blade Runner.
