This is sort of a poor man's Terrence Malick film, with a Quentin Tarrantinoesque monologue tossed in towards the end. The movie is heavy on photography over dialogue and story. There is a story though, sort of a conventional man-woman one about loss and longing that almost veers towards SciFi at the end. If you're a Rooney Mara fan you'll probably want to check this out because she has a lot of screen time. When watching the film I couldn't help thinking that our conventional understanding of the afterlife, the ghost story, is way off the mark (which might be what the director is trying to get the audience to realize).

If you watch movies to add beauty to your life, or for the sake of art, or for the appreciation of craft, then this is a perfect movie. Discount any reviews that say” I watched this while I was...” or “I watched this on fast forward and...” those people miss the point. This movie is moving, beautiful, stunningly photographed, and thought provoking, and each element is dependent on your awareness and the thoughts you bring to the viewing. Not for those looking for action or conventionality obviously!

Too bad for this movie I watched The Killing of a Sacred Deer right before watching this total trash attempt at making an art movie. The comparison between the two was so glaring it made me actually angry at how bad this movie is. I watched this in fast forward and it was still slow. Just because it's slow doesn't make it an art film. Its dumb. And one dimensional. And boring. If you want to watch a real art film, watch The Killing of a Sacred Deer. The only good thing about this movie is it looks like Casey Affleck went and worked out for it. Nice abs Casey, too bad most of your acting was done by a coat rack. Anyway, don't waste your time.

I 'watched' this movie while I worked in the studio. Although it began slowly and progressed slowly and ended slowly, I found myself appreciating the way it was resolved by the finish. It felt like a quiet meditation on death, dying, and grief, that left me with a lingering feeling of peacefulness. But not before creating many moments of disbelief, anxiety and impatience with what appeared to be flaws in the storyline, childlike notions of the afterlife, and the accumulation of what seemed to be unresolvable conflicts. I look forward to seeing this again with new understanding of the story. It may not be as satisfying as the first viewing so I'll give it a few months before looking into it again.

If you like artsy films, it might be your thing. For me, this was boring and random. Hint: I turned on the subtitles and it picked up unspoken dialogue between the two ghosts.

Certainly a strange film but I enjoyed it. Definitely recommend if you have grief in your life. Having said that glad it was 90 or so minutes instead of 120.

This film has a very interesting take on the “classic ghost stories” that we all know and love. The ghost character is very humanized as he watches the woman he loves move on with her life as he spies from the afterlife. The film is definitely more of a dramatic fantasy film that it is a horror story, and the performances are not too bad either. For a low budget movie, the scenes were still very well done. I found the movie to be somewhat slow paced at times and easy to leave and come back to, however, the film was generally creative and had an interesting theme to it. I would rate this movie 3.5/5 stars. @The_Reviewer of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

a very stupid cheaply made unwatchable movie. We didn't finish it, though I was curious enough to check it out on Wikipedia to see what happened next. It just got worse.
No acting was detected. Casey Affleck mostly just stands there, covered with a sheet - you could easily replace him with a coat rack ( which I guess they did - it's cheaper that way). Rooney Mara walks around with the same expressionless boring face no matter what happens in the movie. Actors do not bother opening their mouths to talk - just mumble. I don't know whether it is a fashionable way of talking nowadays or they behaved that way because they thought they were underpaid.

Didn't hate it, but watched with my finger on the FF button all the way through, and will never watch it again. It did make me think about the land we live on, upon which many people lived before. Other than that, there were only a couple of scenes that kept me watching. The other ghost next door waving and waiting for someone to return, and at the end, there are 2 ghosts in the house, which made me think there was one already there when the young couple lived in it. So Casey's character became a second inhabitant? You figure it out.

This is one movie that tries to be an art film, but, fails ridiculously.
I feel sorry for the actors who agreed to take part in this.
The problem is the director is trying to make a statement, yes, but, he fails miserably.
You cannot understand it easily or even at all. There is no overriding main point in it. Maybe there is nothing to understand. Inexorably slow with no revelations at any point.
Misses the mark on every side.
