The second season of The Magicians starts to veer of the path of the books. The season does start off strong, but as the group gradually disbands to deal with their own seperate issues, it loses some of its luster. The story spends a great deal of time in Fillory this season, following the escapades of High King Elliot and Queen Margo. Though I adore the characters, I found the Fillorian plot lines a little boring. This could be due in part to writers attempting to add their first major plot that wasn't sourced from the books.

The rest of the group do get what I consider to be more engaging plots, some of which are taken from the final book in the trilogy, so spoilers if you're planning on finishing the books before the show. Having finished the third season, I can say the second season does a good job of character building to set up the crew for much greater things in season 3.

Decidedly all anti-hero characters in darker plots. There is magic but it is more subdued than Harry Potter style blasting with wands. The language may be a bit intense -- is that really the way 20 year olds converse with each other these days? Also a bit upfront about sexual activities so choose your audience. The characters are certainly interesting even if you can't relate to them and the story telling is good.

Might say this is a Harry Potter for adults.. sometimes a little silly but in a funny way.. I liked season two much better than season one.. I liked it

If you enjoyed Season 1, you'll like Season 2. Sure, it has plenty of adult references, etc.; I suspect that's why adults would enjoy watching it. (Lacking an original review of my own...Rotten Tomatoes...89%.)

Season 2 of The Magicians lost a lot (but not all) of the darker tone season 1 had. The show takes a bigger leap toward being the new 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' with a good amount of campiness, drama, current social issues, moral dilemmas, and the monster villain of the week. There's even a musical episode. It also takes a hard turn away from the material in the novels. Some of it is still there in a simplified form, but for the most part the show stands on its own.
