Caesar's legions, and particularly the 10th, began their partnership in Spain and this story is about the making of a legionnaire from his family to enlistment, training, and the experience of his first campaign. The language is that of soldiers and so are the outlooks expressed as they might be at that time. The author aims to keep authenticity at a high standard while keeping the reader involved in the story. The fighting scenes are brutal and underlines that the main function of the Roman army was conquering and killing others.
