Set in NYC, 1940's City For Conquest was a predictable, melodramatic "weeper" that was moderately entertaining at best.... Had this film's formulaic "rags-to-riches" story not been so contrived, then it might have actually surpassed being the insignificant piece of cinematic fluff that it was inevitably reduced to....Actor James Cagney was 40 years old at the time of this film and he was not at all convincing as the world's next champion in the division of light-weight boxing.
