Truly classic comedy! A rags to riches type story involving Godfrey; a bum who lives at the City Dump who is "won" by a beautiful woman in a scavenger hunt, suddenly finds himself working at their exquisite home as their butler. Some very funny moments here and a little romance as well

Truly a classic and a screwball comedy. I enjoyed watching the exchange in fortunes and also wondering what my grandparents must have thought as they lived through this timeframe.

GREAT 1938 post-Depression screwball comedy. Lots of fun sequences - like when Carlo plays gorilla. whacky maid Molly's role, the Dump nightclub at...the dump, etc.
Overall, an excellent period piece/film exploration of flavors of socio-economic difference.
I'm having so much fun investigating, researching, viewing these films from before I was born - thanks, KCLS (and IMDB)!

FYI--the 1950s remake with David Niven and June Allyson is also zany but updating it to the '50s loses some of the "bite" of the original, but the remake is still worth watching.

William Powell plays Godfrey, a homeless man living in America a few years after the stock market crash of 1929. Powell does a favor for a maiden, played by Carole Lombard, whose whole family is basically oblivious to the tragic poverty of the millions of Americans not in the upper 0.1% and for this favor he gets a job as butler. This film is categorized as a screw-ball comedy and is one of the earliest and best. The American Film Institute ranks this as one of the top 50 American comedies and also in the top 400 of all American films. Now in 2015, just a few years after the Great Recession of 2009, it seems kind of timely, as it depicts the immense wealth gap between the rich and the rest of society.

Great movies come along so infrequently. "My Man Godfrey" was made in 1939 with William Powell and Carol Lombard. Both are wonderful in the movie. I have read so many movie reviewers about "My Man Godfrey" and it is universally loved. Everyone involved with the movie did a superior job working together to bring such a fine film together. I thought it was William Powell's best film performance. You will see him in a totally different light from such hits as "The Thin Man". I hope you and your family get the opportunity to watch such a fine film. Thanks for reading the above. As always, let me know here how you liked the film.
P.S. Thanks to brendacarlson, LadySugar, and Keogh for their reviews of "My Man Godfrey". They all gave it Five Stars and have wonderful comments on the movie.

A marvelously funny comedy that manages to also be a social commentary on the Depression. Powell has terrific chemistry with both Carole Lombard (his ex wife) and Gail Patrick, playing a tramp hired as a butler for a decidedly eccentric family. The film is smart and wonderfully paced, and deserves its status as a true classic.

A wonderful 'depression era' screwball comedy carried by the always funny William Powell, Carole Lombard and a great supporting cast.
