This is a very meaty and entertaining book that focuses on Viking culture in the eve of Norman conquest of England. Dunnett posits that Macbeth was one man that is documented as two historical figures; Thorfinn, earl of Orkney (Norse) and Macbeth, king of Scotland (Gaelic). It's classified as fiction for its lack of footnotes. An excellent read that takes you beyond the highlands and Shakespeare's tragedy.
