Super" is strange, weird and often overly silly, but it certainly is original, has a interesting premise and is often hilariously funny.

Better than "Kick Ass",
...and a lot smarter.
More pithy than just a 'spoof'.

I agree with the good reviews by 'lasertravis' and 'Monolith' (see below).

Before helming one of the summer's biggest movies ("Guardians of the Galaxy"), James Gunn directed a pair of twisted, tongue in cheek genre films that combined violence with dark humor, "Slither" and "Super." "Super" has some similarities with "Kick-Ass," but is more satiric. Basically the premise is that if an ordinary man, in this case a sad sack whose wife has left him, donned a costume and fought crime, he'd probably be a psychopath. Rainn Wilson plays the hero as a kind of homicidal, mentally unbalanced Dwight Schrute, Ellen Page is his plucky, equally unstable partner, Liv Tyler his faithless wife, Kevin Bacon, in full sleaze mode, the shady drug dealer he has to take down, and Bubbles from "The Wire" is a cook. It doesn't always work and there is some pretty graphic violence, but the actors are good and I think Gunn was trying to do something different and a little subversive with what has become one of the dominant movie narratives of our time. It also has some similarities with "Observe and Report," in which a deluded mall cop starts acting like a real cop.

Be warned! This movie is nowhere near what the trailers would lead you to believe. I expected a quirky, off-beat comedy and while there were some funny moments it was mostly very disturbing and graphic violence. I'm not sure what the real meaning of the story was ... violence begets violence? Good performances although Liv Tyler didn't do much beyond playing a drugged out victim of a drug lord.

This has some great actors and really funny performances (Ellen Page and Kevin Bacon are particularly good) but the movie didn't work for me. It seems to be James Gunn's take on the ridiculous vengeful vigilantism of super heroes. It wasn't a lot of fun, though. Mostly disturbing and not for any particular reason.

I really enjoyed this movie. Not what I expected. Better. Similar to a low budget Kick Ass. Graphic violence throughout intermixed with some truly funny moments. Kind of a basic plot, but well done by all involved. The story was much more violent than I expected it to be, so beware of that. Emily Page is great as the psycho sidekick.

HUH !? I don't get it. A cheap, pathetic, no budget movie that was NOT funny at all. There's something wrong if you think this is comedy in any form. The woody harrelson movie was on a higher level (at least on any level) than this "movie". I feel sorry for Mr. Bacon stooping to acting on this level, he must be really broke and desperate for this kind of work. A great way to trash your name & acting career, sorry Mr. Bacon. NOT for any audience with ANY sort of taste in entertainment, including "kiddies".
