3.5 Stars...

Author of the popular blog, "Vegan Lunch Box," Jennifer McCann has packed her debut cookbook with recipes, anecdotes and information to help readers assemble balanced, tasty lunches free of animal products. Though not without its flaws, the book makes vegan meals look appealing and relatively straightforward.

The first part of the book provides a host of menu suggestions and the second contains the actual recipes. McCann organizes the chapters into: Quick and Easy (sandwiches, dips); Rise and Shine (biscuits, muffins); Ready and Waiting (soups, pizza); Lunch Box Advenure (samosas, sushi). Specific recipes include veggie burgers, coconut-carrot rice pudding and PBJ muffins. Though at times McCann relies on processed veggie meats and "fake" cheeses, she certainly advocates for cooking from scratch when time allows. She also describes how to pack lunches in fun, colourful bento boxes, which allows for lots of choice and minimal waste.

Unfortunately, the book contains no pictures save for a few page insert at the book's centre. The index also falls short; if you don't know the exact name of the recipe you want, you're better off flipping through the entire book than searching the index! But, ultimately, the book recommends itself. McCann's writing engages and inspires her readers with scattered tidbits like: "How much to Pack," "Fitting In [for vegan kids]," "Let's Hear It for Legumes" and "And then, a miracle occurred . . . " (about the momentous event of McCann's son eating his first salad). A solid choice for vegans or anyone trying to eat more meat-free meals.

I own this and it is one of the cookbooks I use the most often. It's good for kids and for adults. A lot of the lunch recipes I just make for dinner.
