A sheriff's deputy responding to a 911 hangup stumbles onto the scene of a contract killing at a remote summer home, propelling her into a desperate cat and mouse chase through the adjacent (fictitious) Wisconsin state park. Deaver strives so hard to keep the surprises coming that he doesn't play fair, giving the characters uncanny abilities to second-guess each other. The undeniable excitement of the nighttime chase, however, gives way to a stultifyingly misguided third act, inexplicably focused on the deputy's family problems, which fails to provide a showdown with the villain or follow through on any foreshadowing.

Wasn't particularly impressed by this book from Deaver. I don't like plots where the characters come up with totally unbelievable leaps of logic not just once but 2 or 3 times, making you wonder why they didn't make the right decisions in the first place

It should be a movie because it is one of his most excellent works of art. Jeffery's books, when put to Hollywood, always become a block buster hit movie. This one should be no exception to the rule.

Anna McCafferty shows her many survival skills, perfect complement to law enforcement. My disapointment was only that it took so long for Deaver to deliver another story with her as protaganist.

Good mystery/suspense novel. I prefer the Lincoln Rhyme/Amelia Sachs series but I still enjoy any works of Jeffery Deaver.

Uh-oh. Deaver is either dead-on (!) or badly off the mark. And you guessed it... this is a dud. Dull, plodding, seemingly endless pursuits of two women by two criminals through the wilds of Michigan. The characters aren't well thought out, seem rather shallow, as are the relationships of the murder victims and the female police officer. Feels like a so-so half baked reject that Deaver took off the shelf and dusted off to get another one on the bookstore shelves...

Contrary to "coolpup" review, I found enough action in this book to lose sleep over! Ties for my Deaver favourite with The Vanished Man.

Loved it! I don't usually like to read off shoot books, (this is not a Lincoln Rhymes novel), but this was so good and real page turner with some surprises.

Deaver is a master of the cat and mouse game. Hunter and hunted. There is terror, twists and turns, the unexpected; leaves you turning pages.
