An army ranger on leave returns to his home to learn more about the death of his uncle. Along the way he uncovers a mystery and reveals deadly corruption. The story includes a large cast of characters and unraveling their loyalties is a challenge for Quinn as well as the reader. The story is nothing special, the writing ok. At times I found it confusing.

I can't say I particularly enjoyed this book. It was pretty shallow & full of corrupt people. I wondered if there was inter breeding going on as well. If this is to become a series it will be a short one at the rate of
the people who die & the size of the town.

The first book in a really excellent series. Very realistic plot and fascinating characters. I have now read all of the 'Quinn Colson' books and enjoyed every one.

I also started reading this author after Parker died and he started writing the Spenser novels. I've liked every book of his I've read. Corruption in a small town.

I started reading Ace Atkins' novels after he partnered with the late Robert B. Parker's characters in two new mysteries. Ranger contains echoes of William Faulkner's Mississippi caricatures and plotting, but Atkins makes it easy to get involved with Quinn, Lillie, Jean, Boom and Lena and to want to know what happens next. I'm looking forward to reading more of Atkins' work.

Good beginning for this new series. The small town Mississippi setting is certainly less than idlyic and the characters are not quite as stereotypical as they first appear. Look forward to the next book to see how things develop.

Atkins has written some interesting books, but this novel is disappointing, little more than a Hollywood-ready good old boy action story.
