A real edge-of-your-seat pic!!

South Korea has produced a number of accomplished genre directors in recent years, including Bong Joon-ho ("The Host"), Park Chan-wook ("Oldboy"), and Kim Jee-woon, who directed "I Saw the Devil." All have made English language films with mixed results ("Stoker," "The Last Stand"). Only Joon-ho really succeeded with "Snowpiercer." "I Saw the Devil" can vie with "Oldboy" as one of the most intense, violent, and unsettling action movies I've ever seen. While it might turn some viewers away, I don't think the violence is merely spectacle or exploitation the way it is in films like "Saw" or "Hostel." You feel the brutality of the violence in a way that makes it visceral. I won't give away any of the plot because I think the less you know, the better your experience will be. Not for the faint of heart, but a wrenching and compelling film for those willing to take a trip into the darkness. The other film I've seen of Jee-woon's is the much goofier, over the top kimchi western, "The Good, the Bad & the Weird."

Ultra-violent, but good. Some scenes really had me squirming. Both men were focused on "winning"....

crime drama w/a double twist. Works in English (audio) but subtitles don't follow too closely which is confusing and gives it a "B" movie feel. It is a long movie 2.5 + hrs.

A good movie but I'm more use to the American formula. The scenes build ther story and then some before moving on to the next which stretches the movie out and loses some interest versus building momentum. Over-all, good plot, good story, just took a little long on getting their.

As noted by other viewers, this is "Dirty Harry" on steroids. Not a family viewing affair and you might even have a hard time justifying this choice to your friends or significant other. Best to watch the extras to make everyone feel better about the creative and artistic attributes, and especially to prevent nightmares.
