<3 this book! I reflect on it often while I play piano.
A good sequel to this book is "The Lucy Variations". It's by a different author but the two books are very similar.

Expectations are high for Ally who is the only child of a mother who sang opera but now sings jazz in cramped, dark bars and a father who is first violinist in the Marduvian String Quartet. During the week, Ally attends a private school for academically gifted students where she excels in math. On Saturday, she attends the Pre-College Division music program at the world famous Juilliard School. Her life is full, maybe too full, with school plus recitals, music juries, concerts and summer music camps. If she's lucky, Allly occasionally finds time to get together with her best friend, Opal, whose first love is art. And lately, Brad, from her school has been joining them. Things start to fall apart for Ally at the summer music camp and by fall she can no longer deal with the pressure. Will Ally get the help she so desperately needs but will it mean the end of her music career? Reviewed by BPL volunteer LS.
