This bio gets past the chaff, cling-ons and scavengers. In love with David Reiff, Sigrid moved into his mom's apartment, then realized she was the third wheel. Sontag wrote high minded analysis, but treated friends peevishly. Sigrid was assigned the living room couch so David kept his bedroom for writing. Editing might improve this memoir, but clarity gleams with emotional balance. Neither Sigrid nor David have tapped mom's rigor. Did Sontag's psych binders hobble ? Or have neither worked through her put-downs and self boostering. Why didn't this great mind see how her expectations imposed on loved ones ? Most see that bitching at waiters loses dignity and credibility.
